3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to provide, maintain, and improve our recovery support services and programs, respond to your inquiries and requests for assistance, send newsletters, event information, and organizational updates (with your consent), coordinate peer recovery coaching, family support, and group programming, facilitate harm reduction outreach and Narcan distribution, process volunteer applications, analyze website usage to improve our digital presence, comply with legal obligations, and protect the safety of our community.

If you make a financial donation to Face Addiction Now, we may collect your name, mailing address, email address, phone number, and payment information (such as credit card or bank account details). Donation payment processing is handled by trusted third-party payment processors who are PCI-DSS compliant. We do not store complete credit card numbers or banking details on our servers.

We use your donation information to process and acknowledge your contribution, provide tax receipts or acknowledgment letters as required by IRS regulations for charitable organizations, communicate with you about the impact of your gift (unless you opt out), and maintain records as required by applicable nonprofit financial regulations.

We will never sell, rent, or trade your donor information to third parties. Donor information is kept confidential and is accessible only to authorized staff responsible for processing donations and maintaining financial records. If you wish to make an anonymous donation, please contact us directly and we will accommodate your request to the extent possible.

5. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. We may share your information in limited circumstances, including with trusted service providers who assist us in operating our website, conducting our programs, or serving you (subject to confidentiality agreements), with partner organizations such as participating law enforcement agencies in the Hope Not Handcuffs program solely as necessary to facilitate treatment referrals and support services, and in aggregate or de-identified form that cannot reasonably be used to identify you.

6. Law Enforcement Requests and Legal Disclosures

Face Addiction Now respects the privacy of the individuals we serve. We will not voluntarily disclose your personal information to law enforcement or government agencies except in the following limited circumstances: when we receive a valid subpoena, court order, or other legally binding request, when disclosure is necessary to prevent imminent harm to an individual or the public, when required to report suspected abuse or neglect of a minor or vulnerable adult as mandated by Michigan law, or when necessary to protect the legal rights, property, or safety of Face Addiction Now, our staff, volunteers, or the public.

When we receive a law enforcement request for personal information, we will review the request for legal validity, narrow the scope of disclosure to the minimum information required, notify the affected individual when legally permitted to do so, and maintain a record of all such requests and disclosures.

Participation in our law enforcement partnership programs, such as Hope Not Handcuffs, is always voluntary. Information shared with participating police agencies in those programs is strictly limited to what is necessary to facilitate treatment referrals and is governed by separate program-specific agreements.

7. Sensitive Information and Confidentiality

We understand that individuals interacting with our organization may share sensitive personal information related to substance use, recovery, mental health, or family circumstances. We treat all such information with the highest level of confidentiality and care.
We limit access to sensitive information to authorized staff and volunteers who need it to provide services. We do not publicly disclose any individual’s participation in our programs without their explicit written consent.

8. HIPAA Disclaimer

Face Addiction Now is a community-based nonprofit organization that provides peer recovery support, harm reduction services, and educational programming. We are not a healthcare provider, health plan, or healthcare clearinghouse as defined under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). As such, Face Addiction Now is generally not a HIPAA-covered entity.
However, we recognize the deeply sensitive nature of the information shared with us by individuals and families affected by substance use disorder. Regardless of our HIPAA status, we are committed to safeguarding your personal and health-related information with the same rigor and care that HIPAA-covered entities apply. This includes restricting access to sensitive information on a need-to-know basis, training staff and volunteers on confidentiality and privacy best practices, using secure systems for storing and transmitting personal data, and never disclosing health-related information without your explicit consent except as required by law.

When we refer individuals to HIPAA-covered healthcare providers or treatment facilities, your information shared with those entities becomes subject to HIPAA protections under their own privacy practices. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any healthcare provider to whom you are referred.

9. Data Security

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use, alteration, or destruction. These measures include encrypted data transmission (SSL/TLS) on our website, access controls for staff and volunteer systems, regular review of our data collection and storage practices, and training for staff and volunteers on privacy and confidentiality.

While we strive to protect your information, no method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information. These may include the right to access the personal information we hold about you, request correction of inaccurate information, request deletion of your personal information, opt out of marketing communications, and withdraw consent for data processing where consent is the basis for processing.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the information provided in Section 16 below.

11. Email Marketing and CAN-SPAM Compliance

Face Addiction Now complies with the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, which sets rules for commercial email and gives recipients the right to stop receiving emails. 13. Children’s Privacy and COPPA Compliance

In compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Face Addiction Now does not knowingly collect, use, or disclose personal information from children under the age of 13. Our website, services, and programs are not directed at children under 13.

If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13 without verified parental consent, we will take immediate steps to delete that information from our records.
