The Kent County-Grand Rapids FAN chapter was launched in February 2017 in response to growing concerns about the increasing number of reports on opioid misuse. In 2015, recognizing the severity of the issue, they began reaching out to community leaders and partner agencies in Grand Rapids and Kent County, inviting them to join the conversation and work together on addressing this critical challenge.
The Board and Advisory Board members are dedicated volunteers committed to making a meaningful impact and ensuring that our programming is delivered with integrity and high standards.
Our monthly Family Forums offer education, resources, and support to individuals and families affected by substance use. While we don’t have all the answers, we focus on fostering important conversations that bring hope and explore practical solutions. We offer support to those mourning the loss of a loved one, advocate for appropriate treatment for those incarcerated, and collaborate with the community to build essential resources.
We believe that collaboration across all sectors is essential to finding effective and sustainable solutions.
The severity of the overdose crisis cannot be overstated. The CDC has identified it as one of the most pressing public health challenges, with overdose deaths now exceeding those from car accidents and firearms. Kent County has been significantly affected, ranking among the top five counties most impacted in 2017-18.
Our membership includes law enforcement, judicial professionals, healthcare providers, educators, community advocates, family members, and individuals in or considering recovery. Through our ongoing educational initiatives, we share personal stories to deepen understanding and help reduce the stigma around substance use. We emphasize that substance use disorder is a medical condition, not a moral failing, and that individuals should seek treatment without fear of judgment.
We invite you to join us at our monthly Family Forums to learn more.
