
Chief Block began his law enforcement career with the Village of Morrice and Perry Police Departments. He relocated to Midland in 1993 to begin what would become a proud and rewarding career with the Midland City Police Department. Over the years, he rose through the ranks and was appointed Chief of Police on January 30, 2012, following a nationwide search. During his tenure, he served on the Midland SWAT Team as an operator, sniper, and Team Leader. He also held specialized roles as a field training officer, firearms instructor, tactical weapons instructor, chemical aerosol instructor, armorer for Glock, H&K, and Colt M16 platforms, and as an accident reconstructionist. He currently serves with Saginaw Valley State University.
Chief Block earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Michigan in 1991 and an associate degree in Criminal Justice from Delta College in 1995. He is a graduate of the Eastern Michigan University School of Police Staff and Command (2001), holds a Master of Arts in Leadership in Public Administration from Saginaw Valley State University (2003), completed the Michigan Police Executive Development Seminar (2006), and graduated from the FBI National Academy (Session #229) in 2007.
An active member of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP) since 2004, Chief Block has served on the Alarm Management Committee (including time as chair), the Legislative Committee, and as MACP President from 2017–2018. He is also involved with various professional boards, associations, and service organizations.
